พิพิธภัณฑ์ศิลปะ M+ ของฮ่องกง ริเริ่ม M+ Restored หรือโครงการบูรณะภาพยนตร์ฮ่องกง โดยเน้นไปที่หนังในกลุ่ม Hong Kong New Wave หรือกระแสคนทำหนังที่เปิดฉากหนังฮ่องกงยุคใหม่ตั้งแต่ราวคริสต์ทศวรรษ 1970 อันเป็นช่วงเวลาแห่งความคิดสร้างสรรค์และการทดลองแนวทางใหม่ ๆ หลีกหนีไปจากกฎเกณฑ์เดิม ๆ ของอุตสาหกรรม ผู้กำกับในยุคนั้น เช่น แพทริก ทัม, ปีเตอร์ ยุง, แอนน์ ฮุย, ฉีเคอะ, อัลเลน ฟง และอื่น ๆ ได้รับอิทธิพลจากหนังอาร์ตยุโรป หนังอิสระอเมริกัน และหนังฮอลลีวูดคลาสสิก ผสมผสานกับรสมือแบบฮ่องกง นำมาสู่ผลงานซึ่งเป็นที่จดจำมากมาย
ตลอดปี 2025 M+ Restored ประเดิมด้วยการบูรณะหนังฮ่องกงสามเรื่อง เรื่องแรกคือ The Arch หนังรักรันทดคลาสสิกจากปี 1968 โดยผู้กำกับ ถัง ชู่ฉวน ผู้กำกับหญิงที่เป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้คนทำหนังฮ่องกงยุคหลัง ผลงานบูรณะเรื่องนี้ยังได้รับเลือกให้ฉายในสาย Cannes Classics ต่อมาคือ The System หนังสืบสวนจากปี 1979 โดยผู้กำกับ ปีเตอร์ ยุง และ Love Massacre ที่เป็นทั้งหนังรักและหนังเขย่าขวัญ นำแสดงโดย หลินชินเสีย (หรือ บริจิต ลิน) และกำกับโดย แพทริก ทัม
ระหว่างวันที่ 13 - 15 กุมภาพันธ์ หอภาพยนตร์ร่วมกับ M+ นำภาพยนตร์ทั้งสามเรื่องมาจัดฉายประกบคู่กับหนังระดับตำนานของไทยที่สามารถสร้างบทสนทนาหรือขยายขอบเขตการพูดคุยทั้งในแง่ประเด็นยุคสมัย ตัวละคร ตลอดจนความสำคัญของการบูรณะภาพยนตร์
วันที่ 13 กุมภาพันธ์ The Arch จะฉายคู่กับ เรือนแพ ตำนานหนังไทยของอัศวินภาพยนตร์ ที่ร่วมแสดงโดยดาราฮ่องกง วันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์หรือวันวาเลนไทน์ จัดฉาย Love Massacre จะฉายคู่กับ ชู้ หนังที่ว่าด้วยแรงปรารถนาด้านมืดโดย เปี๊ยกโปสเตอร์ และวันที่ 15 กุมภาพันธ์ The System จะฉายคู่กับ เทวดาเดินดิน หนังวิพากษ์วิจารณ์สังคมโดย หม่อมเจ้าชาตรีเฉลิม ยุคล โดยในช่วงดังกล่าวจะมีงานมายาราตรี งานออกร้านรื่นเริงประจำปีของหอภาพยนตร์จัดควบคู่ไปด้วย
การบูรณะภาพยนตร์เรื่อง The Arch, Love Massacre และ The System สำเร็จได้ด้วยการสนับสนุนจาก CHANEL ซึ่งเป็นพันธมิตรหลักของ M+
M+, a museum of contemporary and visual culture in Hong Kong, has launched a film restoration initiative called “M+ Restored” in partnership with Chanel. M+ Restored aims to increase visibility of Hong Kong rich cinematic heritage by leading the restoration of nine feature-length Hong Kong Film with the focus on the Hong Kong New Wave cinema that emerged from 1979. The first phase of the project consists of three landmark films, The Arch (1968), The System (1979), and Love Massacre (1981).
The Thai Film Archive in collaboration with M+ will screen the three films in the special programme “M+ Restored + Thai Classics”, from Feb 13 to 15. Each day, an M+ Restored title is paired with a Thai classic film to initiate a dialogue based on theme, style or topic, highlighting the importance of film restoration in Asian cinema history.
The elegant, lovelorn drama of The Arch (1968) will be screened with one of Thailand’s best-known love-triangle story, Ruen Pae (The Boat House, 1961). The System (1979), a thriller about drug investigations and corrupt system, will be screened with Tevada Dern Din (Grounded God, 1976), a gritty film about rebellious youths during the political uncertainty of the 1970s.
Love Massacre (1981), a tumultuous love-hate story, will be paired with Chu (The Adulterer, 1972), a hothouse melodrama and the mad love that drove two men to fight for her body and soul.
All Hong Kong films have Thai and English subtitles.
