A Finnish-Palestinian woman, Amani Lillak, is completing her voluntary military service in the Finnish Army’s medical corps. During a final combat exercise, Lillak learns that the crisis in her father’s homeland has further escalated. At the same time, the intensity of the combat exercise pushes internal tensions within the medical corps to their breaking point. Lillak tries to turn her back on both conflicts and be free for just a moment.

Dreamt by Another is an allegorical take on creating with artificial intelligence and a meditation on identity, memory, and love. Interweaving passages from Pinocchio (1883), The Velveteen Rabbit (1922), Frankenstein (1818), and Borges’s The Circular Ruins (1940), the film builds a single narrative about coming into existence. It extends the lineage of wooden puppets, toys, and monsters into the realm of artificial intelligence, as the latest chapter in humanity’s pursuit to make the unreal come alive. Rooted in Vikki Bardot’s long-standing artistic practice of exploring visual textures and dreamlike aesthetics, the film asks: What does it take to become real?

The Salween River is slowly losing her soul. Forced to carry minerals from upstream mining operations along her currents, she has become tainted by foreign substances that corrode her ancient memories. As illness spreads through her body, she drifts back through the winding memories of the mountains from which she came and recalls the tale of the Nya-Htee fish, a creature she has long cherished.

The story reminds her of Lamnuetor, an Indigenous woman who left her village to work in the city. For more than two decades, she kept her beautiful singing voice hidden away. Only when the state finally recognised her existence through official documentation did she begin to sing again in the world beyond silence. Her voice becomes a fragile barrier between the river and the forces of change, sustained by a promise to return home with the rainy season.

But the river's time is running out. The sickness spreads throughout the watershed. Fish, mollusks, soil and vegetation all suffer from the contaminants flowing through her body.

And so the Salween River tells the story of the Nya-Htee fish again and again, cradling the scattered fragments of memory belonging to both the river and its people, so that they will not disappear into the silence that is slowly drawing near.
